From the trenches of America.
Let me start by saying I Love America, but man am I disallusioned with the current state of affairs brought on by ongoing greed and corruption from business and our elected officials. The economy is in chaos and our very livelihoods are threatened.
As I work in the trucking industry I literally deliver next weeks economy. I can tell you from here that most if not all OTR (over the road i.e. long haul) drivers whether working as a company driver as I am or lease operators or full owner operators are spending large amounts of time in between orders (runs) sitting in truckstops across the nation hoping to get on the road. Drivers do not make any money when sitting and spend quite a bit. We are oveercharged for food, services and restricted by government regulations that if applied to the average citizen would have him up in arms about the unfairness of it all. So be it. We are drivers who love our way of life and put up with a lot of discomfort and abuse in order for the public to have full shelves at their stores and the wonderful selection of goods that we enjoy in our country.
That being said we look upon the current round of government bailouts of financial institutions that reward their executives for failure with more disdain that many average folks. Why? Because we are some of the first to feel the impact of the incompetance of these greedmongers. Freight began to slow down years before the Economic Crisis became part of the front page. The price of fuel, slow freight and tighter government regulations have caused the collapse of many smaller trucking firms, as well as a few larger ones. Those companies still hanging on will undoubtedly see massive expansion when the economy turns around due to lack of competition. I have not seen any trucking companies getting bailouts. Many that went under we well run and well managed, but that did not save them when the bubble burst. What we see from here are poorly run companies with shoddy management, being rewarded for creating the current crises with taxpayer monies. Everything is delivered by truck. If the trucking industry goes down, we all go down.
We as a nation have forgotton what it is that makes us special in all the history of the world. It is our people, our diversity and our tenacity that make us great. Companies like AIG and the others that we are so willing to bankroll are the cause of our problems and do not create the jobs we need.
Let them fail, as so many of the companies too small to attract government attention have. No one stepped up to the plate for that small town grocer, that trading card company or even for the larger electronics dealers that went under. Mom and Pop businesses accross the country are boarded up right along with larger companies. these are the companies we should be saving. These are the companies that employ us.
America must stand up and say ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Time to quit giving corperate fat cats our money and start putting it where it will do some good. Tax breaks for small businesses, easier financing for small business and medium sized businesses. Reduced fuel taxes. Grants to businesses on main street America, not to Criminals on Wall street. Most of us don't work there!!
Every small town I drive through I see economic decay, boarded up shops. broken dreams. We spend millions to shore up criminal organizations and millions more to fight wars to bring Democracy to people who don't want it. That money would do much more good in our schools and hometown businesses.
Just the opinion of someone looking at the nation from ground level
Sorry if I ramble a bit, this is my first attempt at writing an article.
